OIE partakes in the African Platform for Animal Welfare (AU)

In order to identify and prioritize key issues and intervention areas on animal welfare in Africa, the AU Interafrican Bureau for Animal Resources (IBAR), in close partnership with World Animal Protection (WAP) and The Brooke, organised the first animal welfare technical meeting, held from 27 to 29 July 2015 in Naivasha, Kenya.

The meeting involved various experts from AU-IBAR, FAO-ECTAD Eastern Africa, stakeholders from Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya and Tanzania, OIE-Eastern Africa, World Animal Protection (WAP), African Network for Animal Welfare (ANAW), The Brooke, The Donkey Sanctuary, IUCN and the Pan African Animal Welfare Alliance (PAAWA).

The meeting led to propose the establishment of an African Platform for Animal Welfare (APAW) which will be launched during a continental conference on animal welfare, in Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) later this year : 11 – 12 November 2015.
