Dr Masiga presented the current state of affairs with regard to the PVS Pathway in Tanzania and highlighted some of the ongoing programmes of the OIE in the sub-region, including the twinning programme for laboratories. Dr Masiga also discussed the problem of the broken chain of command within the Veterinary Services as a result of the devolution of powers to the regions and the districts in Tanzania.
The visit was continued in the northern town of Arusha, where Dr Masiga paid a visit to the Zonal Veterinary Centre and the Headquarters of the East African Community (EAC) where he was received by the Head of the Agricultural Development Department, Mr. Moses Marwa. The discussion evolved around the possible observer status of the EAC to the OIE and vice-versa. A formal Cooperation Agreement in this respect will be signed shortly.
