OIE and FAO recently concluded a joint technical back-stopping mission to Mozambique (10 to 15 November) so as to provide advice to the Mozambican Government on how to deal with the outbreak of white spot disease of shrimp (WSSV) in several aquaculture establishments (prawn production).

Conducted by Drs Marc Le Groumellec (OIE) and Rohana Subasinghe (FAO), the mission took a closer look at the circumstances of the introduction of this new diseases (originating from Asia) and made several recommendations aiming at preventing, containing and controlling this disease of crustaceans which has ravaged production in South Asia, South-East Asia and East-Asia, including Japan, China and South Korea since the nineties.

The experts assessed not only the circumstances of the outbreak at the production-site, but also overall diagnostic capability, available legislation, surveillance and awareness amongst industry stakeholders and political decision-makers.
