Dr Yacouba Samake confirmed as OIE Regional Representative for Africa

After the untimely passing away of the OIE Regional Representative, Dr Abdoulaye Niang, on November 25th last year, Dr Yacouba Samake, Deputy-Representative immediate took over at the helm of the OIE office for Africa as acting Representative. During the inauguration of the new OIE headquarters for Africa on April 14th, in Bamako, Mali, the OIE Director General Dr. Bernard Vallat, in his address to the President of the Republic of Mali, announced that Dr Yacouba Samake has been confirmed as Regional Representative for Africa as per April 1st, 2011.

A vacancy announcement has been launched for the recruitment of a new Deputy-Representative as from July 1st, 2011.

Dr Samake, a Mali national was born in 1951 in the district of Bougouni and graduated as a veterinary surgeon from the Leipzig Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in Germany, in 1978. While he worked for the Mali government, he qualified for a course on natural resource management in the United States in 1991, for a course on agricultural extension services from the University of Wageningen in the Netherlands in 1992, and went on to attend the National School of Public Administration in Quebec, Canada for which he certified in 1994.

As civil servant for the Republic of Mali, he served as Director of the Veterinary Nursing School and then went on to become Deputy Director of the Department of Livestock Services. In 2002, Dr Samake became advisor in charge of food security policies at the then Ministry of Food Security. Thereafter he became the first Permanent Secretary of the newly established Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries (2004). In 2008, he was appointed OIE Deputy Regional Representative for Africa.
He is married, has three children and enjoys hiking in his spare time.

In his capacity as Regional Representative, Dr. Samake hopes to make a significant contribution to help African countries attain international standards for veterinary services.
