Official disease status

Since 1998, the OIE has the mandate from the WTO to officially recognise disease-free areas of countries for trade purposes. The procedure for the official recognition of disease status by the OIE is voluntary and applies currently to six diseases. As per June 2019, the status is as follows :

 

Freedom from African Horse Sickness (AHS)

  • Algeria : country-wide
  • Morocco  : country-wide
  • Tunisia  : country-wide

 

 

Freedom from Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE)

  • Namibia : negligeable risk

 

Freedom from Contagious Bovine Pleuropneumonia (CBPP)

  • Botswana : country-wide
  • Namibia : zone, south to the Veterinary Cordon Fence
  • South Africa : country-wide

 

Freedom from Classical Swine Fever (CSF)

  • None

 

Freedom from Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) without vaccination

  • Botswana : zone(s)
  • eSwatini : country-wide
  • Lesotho : country-wide
  • Madagascar : country-wide
  • Namibia : zone, south to the Veterinary Cordon Fence
  • South Africa : zone (suspended)

 

Freedom from Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR)

  • Botswana : country-wide
  • eSwatini : country-wide
  • Madagascar : country-wide
  • Mauritius : country-wide
  • Namibia : zone, south to the Veterinary Cordon Fence
  • South Africa : country-wide
